Study Permit Requirements
To obtain a Canadian study permit, applicants must satisfy applicable requirements under Canadian law:
- Acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
- A provincial or territorial attestation letter where required
- Proof of sufficient financial support
- Meeting applicable admissibility requirements
- Demonstrating that the applicant meets requirements for proposed studies and temporary stay
Additional requirements may apply depending on country of residence, program, and family situation.
Proof of Financial Support
Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to pay for tuition, living expenses and transportation for themselves and accompanying family members, as applicable.
For applications made on or after September 1, 2026, applicants outside Quebec must generally demonstrate the required amount for living expenses in addition to tuition and transportation costs. (Baseline reference for 1 person outside Quebec: CAD $23,448/year).
The applicable financial requirements can change. Applicants should use current IRCC requirements when preparing their application.
Accompanying Family Members
Bring Your Family to Canada
Depending on their circumstances, a student’s spouse or partner and dependent children may be able to accompany them to Canada. Each accompanying family member must meet applicable immigration requirements and may require their own application.
Utman Immigration can assist with the immigration needs of accompanying family members as part of the overall study service.
Previous Study Permit Refusal
Overcoming Setbacks
A previous study permit refusal does not necessarily prevent you from applying again. A new application should carefully consider reasons for the previous refusal and address relevant concerns.
